English

Forecasting the effective export price of Iranian crude oil is of significant importance due to the country's economic reliance on oil revenues and the oil market's sensitivity to economic, financial, and geopolitical factors. This study aims to forecast the effective export price of Iranian crude oil using LSTM and GRU deep learning models and to examine the informational value of exchange rate volatility and sanctions. The research is applied in nature, employs a quantitative and predictive approach, and relies on secondary monthly data. To evaluate the informational value of exogenous variables, three scenarios were designed: historical prices alone; historical prices combined with exchange rate volatility; and historical prices combined with exchange rates and a sanctions index. Model performance was assessed using RMSE, MAE, MAPE, and R² metrics. Simulation results indicated that incorporating exogenous variables improved the performance of both models. In the full scenario, the RMSE for the LSTM model dropped from 2.84 (baseline scenario) to 2.08, while the RMSE for the GRU model fell from 2.67 to 1.91. Additionally, the MAPE for the LSTM and GRU models reached 5.37% and 4.96%, respectively, in the full scenario, and their R² values rose to 0.947 and 0.956. When compared to XGBoost, the LSTM and GRU models demonstrated lower error rates under conditions of complete information. The findings indicate that the simultaneous use of historical price data, exchange rate fluctuations, and a sanctions index can provide a more suitable framework for forecasting the effective export price of Iranian crude oil; furthermore, the GRU architecture demonstrated superior performance compared to LSTM on the simulated data.
