Abstract
The aim of this study is to design and validate a psycho-financial framework for analyzing the credit behavior of customers of Iranian commercial banks. The research employed a mixed-methods approach with a sequential exploratory design. In the qualitative phase, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 23 individuals—including credit managers and experts from commercial banks as well as customers with a history of default—and analyzed using the thematic analysis method based on the approach of Braun and Clarke. The results of this phase led to the identification of the framework's key dimensions: financial anxiety, institutional trust, attitudes toward financial obligations, cognitive biases, financial decision-making patterns, financial locus of control, past credit experiences, customer behavioral characteristics, and environmental factors influencing credit behavior. In the quantitative phase, the derived framework was tested and validated using data from 492 customers of Iranian commercial banks and structural equation modeling. The findings revealed that psychological and behavioral components, alongside customers' financial characteristics, play a significant role in explaining credit behavior; variables such as financial anxiety, trust in the banking system, risk perception, and financial decision-making patterns were identified as key determinants of customer credit behavior. Furthermore, model fit indices confirmed the validity of the proposed framework. Based on the research findings, the proposed psychofinancial framework can serve as a complementary approach within bank credit assessment systems. By providing deeper insight into customers' psychological and behavioral dimensions, it helps improve credit decisions, reduce uncertainty in granting credit facilities, and manage credit relationships more effectively. By integrating perspectives from behavioral finance, financial psychology, and credit management, this study presents a novel framework for analyzing customer credit behavior within the Iranian banking system.
